The No Echo Echolalia Intervention System is the only systematic program available to remediate Echolalia in children with autism. It utilizes a discrete trial-type methodology to facilitate functional communication in children with autism.
The No Echo Program focuses on minimizing/eliminating echolalia and establishing the conversational dyad. It uses the clear cut exchange of the question-answer dyad in which one person says something and the other responds with something else to teach the "volley" or exchange that occurs in conversation. Once the question-answer dyad is established, echolalia will be minimized, the child with autism will possess the ability to develop generative or creative spoken language, thus improving the quality of the communicative interactions of the child with autism.
How It Works
The card reader is used to play questions/probes from pre-recorded magnetic cards. The questions/probes are presented in a hierarchical fashion. The interventionist models the appropriate/desired response while using the specified physical and gestural prompts. As the child achieves the recommended target for each phase then they are able to advance to the next phase and work through the phases of the program. Working through the phases establishes the conversational dyad within the child. They learn the conversational "volley" (i.e. I say something and you say something else). This eliminates the child's use of non-functional echolalic events.
The determination to use the No Echo Echolalia Intervention program should be based on the child's demonstration of a desire to communicate verbally and the presence of echolalia, and not on age.
The No Echo Echolalia Intervention program should ideally be used in a one-on-one setting. It can be modified to be used in a small group setting. A circle-time kit is currently being put together.
